Aftercare, Maintenance and Relapse Management

Achieving sobriety is a huge accomplishment but treatment for substance abuse addictions does not stop after a person successfully detoxes and withdraws from drugs. Drugs and alcohol addiction is a medical disorder that affects the brain, changes behaviour and is chronic and relapsing in nature. Studies have found that within 1 year following treatment, 85% of people relapse and return to drug use. When individuals take advantage of aftercare services, their rates of relapse decrease.

Recovery from drug addiction does not stop when a treatment period ends. At its core, aftercare should be considered a type of continued treatment, which immediately follows a period of addiction treatment care. Your post-treatment time interval is a crucial period, where strides made during recovery are reinforced. SANCA Durban offers different kinds of aftercare treatment options which can help prevent relapse and expand upon the coping strategies learned during rehabilitation.

These include

  • Weekly support group meetings on Monday at 18h00 or Tuesday at 9h00
  • Group Counselling: The patient will listen to and share experiences associated with addiction and work to build social and coping skills in a group setting.
  • Individual Counselling: The patient will meet one-on-one with a therapist to build upon the progress made during the initial treatment.
  • Fellowship programmes, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) provide support and encouragement for the individual on the road to recovery.

Now that you know what aftercare is, you can rest assured that the treatment process does not end the day you walk out of the treatment program. After learning about aftercare, you may be ready to begin your life of recovery from addiction and substance abuse. SANCA Durban offers a rehabilitation facility that includes aftercare as well as treatment. Contact us to learn more and begin your happy life free of drugs and alcohol. The path is waiting for you
